School Introduction

World class teaching and research
We were ranked 8th in the UK for teaching quality in the most recent government teaching assessments and 9th out of all UK universities in the 2008 Research Assessment (RAE) with many subjects rated as ‘outstanding’ by international standards.

18 Departments
We offer courses across 18 academic departments in four faculties: Law and Management, Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, and Humanities and Comparative Studies. Our departments offer programmes of study at all levels from pre-Bachelors, Bachelors, Masters to MPhil and PhD.

English language support
We offer preparatory English language support from a full year to a range of pre-sessional programmes of 15, 10 and 5 weeks’ duration. We have a pre-Bachelors foundation year and a range of pre-Masters foundation (Graduate Diploma) programmes which can support students in enhancing both their academic and English language levels before a degree programme.

Ideally located
All our campuses are less than one hour from central London by train. The local airport of Stansted, less than 1 hour away, gives access via cheap flights to over 100 destinations in Europe and beyond. Heathrow and Gatwick international airports are both less than two hours away by road or rail. Colchester is Britain’s oldest recorded town and rich in history and Southend offers an attractive seaside location but with big city facilities.

A friendly and international environment
Currently 40% of our students come from outside the UK and from over 130 different countries worldwide. We also have a very internationally diverse staff body. Our campus locations help to develop a real sense of community and Colchester and Southend are towns with crime rates among the very lowest in the UK.

Outstanding academic and social facilities
These include modern science and engineering laboratories and award winning entertainment venues. We have recently invested in a major expansion to our Sports Centre facilities. There are several cafes on campus providing a variety of international cuisines and a shop that sells most of the items needed on a daily basis, so a good meal is never far away!

Award winning accommodation
We guarantee on-campus accommodation for the first year of study to all our new international students and all rooms are within 10 minutes’ walk of the teaching buildings. Many of the rooms have en-suite bathroom facilities and there is a range of different price levels on offer starting from under £70 per week. All are single bedrooms with internet access. Our new accommodation in Southend is in a major landmark building in the town centre and just five minutes’ walk from the teaching buildings.
